Wood Bowl Frequently Asked Questions

How do I clean and care for my wood bowl?

Simply clean your bowl using warm water and a small amount of mild soap. If using a sponge or cloth, make sure that it's non-abrasive. Then hand dry.

Bee's Oil Salad Bowl and Wood Preserver will occasionally need to be re-applied to your bowl to preserve the moisture content of the wood. Without this protective coating the wood will dry out and may crack, become stained or warp. When the wood becomes dry, it's best to re-apply Bee's Oil Salad Bowl and Wood Preserver to protect the bowl from moisture and stains.

Bee's Oil and Wood Preserver
  • Never soak wood bowls in water, or let water stand inside of them.
  • Never clean your wood bowl in the dishwasher.
  • Do not micorowave your wood bowl or put it in a conventional oven.
  • Don't leave your wood bowl in the direct sunlight for extended periods of time.
  • It is recommended that you don't use vegetable oil to protect your wood bowl because vegetable oil builds up over time and leaves the wood tacky and sometimes rancid.

Are wood bowls food safe?

Salad Utensil Set Behlen Salad Bowl Finish
Yes, our wood bowls are completely food safe. It is recommended that wood bowls are finished before they come into contact with food or liquids. Both of the wood bowl finishes we carry are non-toxic and food safe. Bee's Oil Salad Bowl and Wood Preserver is non-toxic and food safe and our Behlen Salad Bowl Finish is non-toxic when cured.
Do not microwave your wood bowl or put it in a conventional oven.

Can unfinished wood bowls be stained or painted on?

Yes. These wood bowls have been finely sanded and are ready for staining, painting, burning or carving. Many of our artists use our wooden bowls as a decorative and tole painting surface.

Are first quality bowls perfectly round?

No. Due to the old world traditional methods in which they are turned and dried they are not perfectly round.
